Students at Aligarh Muslim University today intensified their agitation for restoration of students union following breakdown of talks between protesters and Vice-Chancellor P K Abdul Azis. Two of the student leaders began an "indefinite hunger strike" in front of the Vice-Chancellor''s residence. The students, who sat on a dharna last week, are demanding restoration of the AMU Students Union which has been defunct for the past four years and the removal of senior University officials whom they blame for "rustication of more than 150 students during the past three years". Reacting to the breakdown of talks last night, Azis said, "We had given an assurance that once we receive the recommendations of the AMU court appointed Moosa Raza Committee for electoral reforms at AMU, elections to the student''s union would be held this year."We have also given a time frame of three months for the completion of the recommendations of the above committee." Despite the above assurances, the students are refusing to call off their protest, he added.
