AMU falsely claiming to be a minority institution: BJP

New Delhi, Aug 7 (PTI) BJP today alleged that Aligarh Muslim University is falsely claiming to be a minority institution and not providing reservation to SC, ST and OBCs in admission and appointment of teaching and non-teaching staff. "Aligarh Muslim University has been eating away the reservation rights of SC/ST/OBCs, in admissions as well as in appointment in teaching and non-teaching staff by falsely claiming the status of a minority institution," BJP spokesperson Ramnath Kovind said. He sought the intervention of Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and Human Resource Development Minister Kapil Sibal in the matter. "BJP demands that the Prime Minister and the HRD Minister should explain why reservation policy is not being implemented in AMU though it is a central university being funded and administered by the Government of India," Kovind said. Taking a dig at Congress General Secretary Rahul Gandhi, Kovind said while BJP appreciated his visits to Dalit households to have dinner and spend the night, the young MP had never made known his views on education for Dalits. "If Rahul Gandhi is not concerned about education of Dalits then his visits to Dalit households should be considered as mere hypocrisy," Kovind said. He warned that if AMU did not change its stand on reservations for SC,ST and OBCs, BJP will have to think of launching a nationwide agitational programme for this cause. Citing a Allahabad High Court order, Kovind said, "AMU is an institution of national importance. It was created by an Act of Parliament while minority institutions can only be created by the minority community." "50 per cent reservation for Muslim students in PG courses is unconstitutional and AMU shall make no claim of minority quota," Kovind said quoting the order. It is a central university which is open to people from all religions, race, sex and caste, he said.
